Guest blog: Reach Your Better Self: A Self-Improvement Guide for 2018

By Jennifer Scott

CaptureDon’t fall into the trap of thinking that the better version of yourself is unattainable, out of reach, or a fantasy. You can improve yourself and reach your potential. It is not impossible or far-fetched. Begin by caring for yourself and achieving balance in various aspects of your life.
According to Psychology Today, a concept known as self-love is important to living well. It affects the way you see the world and how you cope with the world’s challenges. The state of loving oneself involves engaging in actions that support physical, emotional, and spiritual health. Caring for oneself is vital when setting and achieving personal and professional goals.

Physical Health

Exercise
Find a kind of exercise or sport that appeals to your personality, lifestyle, and schedule. Look into a variety of options and stay open to new opportunities:
Gym membership. Join a traditional gym and commit to a certain schedule per week. This is a great way to begin if you haven’t exercised in some time because you can go at your own pace.

Try a new sport. Find out if your local recreation center has adult sports teams you can join. Joining a team sport can not only provide some fun social interaction in a new setting, but it helps people commit to schedule.

Try out a class. There are many schools and academies in your area that offer free classes to try out their programs. Sign up for a free dance class, martial arts lesson, or yoga session. Trying it out beforehand will give you a taste of what to expect.

LiveScience recommends starting off slow and gradually working your way up. Make sure to be honest about your current fitness level to avoid injury, and set goals for yourself to stay motivated.

Loving yourself also means staying away from behavior and substances that harm you. Exercise has recently emerged as a great companion to addiction recovery. The National Institute of Health cites that aerobic exercise can help people that abuse illicit drugs. Physical activity releases endorphins in the brain which produce a “high” feeling and help in restoring a balance in the brain. It aids in promoting feelings of positivity, improved mood, and better sleep.

Change Your Fuel

Diet is key. Many people often cite a lack of time as an impediment to eating better. However, establishing good eating habits and avoiding fast food doesn’t have to be that difficult. All it takes is a little organization and a nutritional plan:

  • Meal planning: Take one day a week for bulk cooking, and freeze portions that you can eat throughout the week. Make sure your meals are well balanced with protein, carbohydrates, and healthy fats.
  • Plan trips to the store: Do not shop while hungry. Plan your grocery trips, follow the list based on your meal plans, and do not buy junk food or sugary stuff.
  • Eat anti-inflammatory foods: Inflammation is a generator of pain, infections, injuries, and bad moods. Eat a diet high in Omega 3 fatty acids to ward off inflammation and stay away from refined carbohydrates like french fries.

Follow Your Passions

The source of many people’s unhappiness often stems from a sense of unfulfillment. People give up on their passions for a variety of reasons. Generally people who pursue their hobbies and passions are happier and more productive. So don’t be afraid to pursue the hobby that keeps you happy and engaged.

Little Acts of Self-Love

A big part of caring for yourself is to spoil yourself when you achieve a goal or are successful in a particular area of your life. Treat yourself to a massage, visit a spa, or update your wardrobe. Small little acts of kindness toward yourself keep you motivated by providing positive reinforcement that keeps you disciplined and focused.
The best version of you is waiting to be be unleashed. Write down your goals and commit to them on paper. As you cross things off your list, you’ll find yourself feeling empowered and confident to take anything on. This year, reach your better self through a little self-care, discipline, and consistency.

Putting Things in Perspective

Ever since we learned how to talk, it was imperative to tell people how old we were, “I am Two”,  “I am three and a half”. Of course, when children say it, it sounds so cute. As we get older, we start measuring things in the same exact way we did as children, using years, days and months; which seems the only normal way of doing things.

We make this much money a year, we will retire at this age or in this many years. All seemed going smoothly until we discovered that animal years are different from that of a human. For instance, a 14 years old dog is considered to be like an 82 years old man in human years. So when we look at a dog that is 14 years old, he might be thinking “This human is more like a dinosaur, he is at least 200-250 years old”, right?

So we just did a comparison between two living organisms, the human being and the dog. We can definitely expand the list to include mammals, fish and all sorts of other species.

Now the fun part begins. I think by now you might have an idea of what I am proposing. Let us compare our human years to the years in heaven. Are they the same? Are they different? Well, what if they’re different. What if one day in heaven is equivalent to one year on earth? What if one day equates to 100 or a million years?

Now here’s where the scary thought really is. What if God has a day off?

If our time here on earth is relatively equal to heaven’s time, then we risk an entire 24 hour without any divine interference due to God’s day off. Think globally now! Galaxies, planets etc… Everything is hanging by a thread.

If our time here on earth is vastly different from heaven’s time, then what? If our earthly 100 years equate to one day, and that happens to be the day God decided to have a day off, then what? Then the fun begins. Do you really want to be around on God’s day off?

You would pray to God, but he’s not listening because it’s his day off. Try praying in a 100 years when he’s available.

P.S: I am not saying that God has a day off. I am not trying to insult anyone, but I’m simply trying to put things in perspective. Be grateful to what you have.

The Gerson Therapy – The Body’s Healing Power

I love watching documentaries. They open your eyes to new ideas and concepts to explore.

One thing I have stumbled across is ‘The Gerson Therapy’. It was referenced in a few documentaries* I watched and I was mesmerized with the concept and remedy.

I am not going to go through a historical anecdote of the therapy and all that. I am going to discuss the therapy itself.

If you suffer from any kind of cancer, chronic degenerative diseases or illness, be it the common cold to the most deadly and untreatable of all diseases, ‘The Gerson Therapy’ seems to be able to fight it all and actually CURE and HEAL you and not the symptoms.

I enjoy visualizing ‘the Gerson therapy’ as a comic superhero like no other. She would be invincible and ready to save the day all the time 24/7. Why she? Because the therapy is so holistic and derived from Mother Nature that it is no doubt a she healer. “The She Healer” would be her name 🙂

Anyway to get back on track…. The Gerson Therapy believes that the body has an amazing ability to heal itself. The body is normally organized in order to heal. If you cut or burn yourself in the kitchen while preparing food your wounds will eventually heal. If you break your leg, your body will eventually repair the damage and heal. It is our built in “Natural Healing Mechanism” (and you thought that cars only have built in features!). Thus the only thing you have to do when or if you ever get sick is to restore and rebuild the bodies healing mechanism which is being suppressed and damaged by all the waste, pesticides, preservatives, damaged and processed foods, and additives that are in the poisonous food we are consuming. So, all you have to do is the following (note: therapy is modified depending on the illness you suffer from. I am not an expert on the subject so if you are sick please do your own research, check out the institute, and follow their recommendations):

I-     Juicing: Fresh juices are so helpful and powerful for the body. Fresh organic nutrients are the only thing that the body needs to work on. The human body is not designed to work on pasta, fries and steak which have no vitamins, mineral and nutrition. Even vegetarians who are adding salad dressings and are eating damaged vegetables and fruits that are exposed to pesticides and fungicides are not nourishing their systems but are poisoning it. So the solution to nourish your body is fresh organic produce. In order to provide your cells with fresh living nutrients they can absorb and utilize quickly to keep our defenses going, juices are the key. Removing the fiber and only drinking the juice will allow us to get more nutrients and vitamins in our system. Here are the juices you are to have on daily basis:

  1. One fresh organic orange juice for breakfast (vitamin C)
  2. Green juice: green lettuce, chard, green pepper, red cabbage put together with an apple (which has pectin in it that makes it highly digestible)
  3. Apple and Carrot mix juice: biochemists and doctors found that the acid of the apple that are ground influence the carrots to release minerals. Thus, the combination gives the best release of minerals.
  4. Carrot only Juice: served with liver capsules which produces Vitamin A (good for cancer treatment)

(The therapy prohibits the drinking of water. The juices are served every hour, thus the system is highly hydrated.)

II-     Coffee Enemas: Drinking coffee is prohibited in the Gerson therapy. But coffee used in enema gives the body a totally difference effect. It cleanses the liver and helps it restore its function.

III-     Have full vegetarian meals with fiber in them. Meals consisting of fresh organic vegetables and fruits. Use of flax seed oil is allowed. No Salt to be used. Go crazy with recipes.

IV-     Meditation helps heal and restore balance to our systems.

What about protein?

The biggest strongest land animals are elephants, bulls and gorillas. They are vegetarian. Very often the vegetarian animals are bigger, stronger and healthier than the meat eaters.

This reminds me of a scene from the animated move “Ice Age Dawn of the Dinosaurs” where the tiger chasing a dear looses his breath after a few seconds but the dear keeps running and running.

The vegetarian diet is rich in proteins. The most complete protein is in carrots and carrot juice. If you feed a new born nothing but carrot juice they are perfectly normal and develop healthy. Carrots have almost the same amount of protein as mothers’ milk and it has all the other things that babies need: calcium, magnesium, manganese etc. You also get proteins in potatoes, oatmeal, and in all other vegetables.

The therapy is not an easy one to adopt especially with the lifestyles we have gotten accustomed to. From the daily takeouts to the social events that always include something to nibble on and drink. But at the end of the day health is the most important element of our life. When you are unhealthy you are unable to lead a normal life. You are always sick and tired and sad. We owe it to ourselves to start adopting some healthy choices. Maybe buy a juicer and start trying the juices that are mentioned above. If we see any improvement in our health, maybe we can cut back on animal products, additives and preservatives. Then maybe we can start doing the coffee enemas to help our liver rid itself from all the toxins we are consuming.

It is funny how our priorities are distorted. We spend so much money on our outer appearances (which is not a bad thing at all), but we tend to go cheap when it comes to buying healthy products for our system.

Consider showing off your healthy body and healthy system. Boast about your health and well being. Please read more about the subject. You never know when you may need the therapy or a slap in the face and a wake up call to adopt a healthier lifestyle just to stay alive. Don’t wait until you are in desperate need. Don’t wait until you get sick. Act now.

Take care of yourself. You have the potential to cure yourself.

Quotes

Charlotte Gerson:

“When your defenses are in order cancer is impossible”

“Cancer is totally curable by restoring the body’s ability to reactivate this healing mechanism”

“Chemotherapy does not restore the body’s ability to heal. It poisons it further. It weakens the immune system”

“Nature has set it all up… it is alright”

“The only thing the public thinks of when it thinks of proteins is animal proteins. But the human body is not designed from animal proteins. It cannot handle it correctly. It cannot break it down to the end product and lodge it correctly.”

Jay Kordich:

“live food… live bodies. Dead food…things that are cooked, things that are processed… dead food…death does not beget life, only life begets life.”
